Senate Scholar Program Accepting Applications – Those interested in the 2009 Senate Scholars program should begin their applications. 33 young adults are chose to participate on a competitive basis through application. This is a great program for young adults interested in how government works and a fun and very informative way to expand their access to the Wisconsin Senate. The program is open to Wisconsin high school students age 16-18 years old. Applications are due January 1st. Madison, Wisconsin Named to Top Five Bike Friendly Cities - National Geographic Adventure Magazine has named Madison, Wisconsin one of the Top Five Biking Cities in America. Also chosen were Portland, Oregon - Davis, California - Tucson, Arizona - Boulder, Colorado.

 

Beth Zurbuchen named President of Swiss Center of North America – The 27th Senate Districts own Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus has named Beth Zurbuchen as President and CEO as of September 8th. Beth is not a new face to South Central Wisconsin, with more than 30 years of media and organizational leadership credentials. Free Counseling for Small Businesses – Southwest Wisconsin Small Business Development Center is holding office hours to provide free counseling for local entrepreneurs. Today, September 12th in Monroe at Blackhawk Technical College and Monday in Platteville at UW Platteville. There are many more scheduled days in Southwestern Wisconsin in the upcoming weeks. AmeriCorps Grant Funds are Available in WisconsinAmeriCorps funds are available to non-profit organizations, state and local units of government, institutions of higher education, faith based organizations and Indian tribes to operate national service programs addressing Wisconsin communities’ education, public safety, environmental, homeland security of other human needs. Senator Jon Erpenbach 100% from Sierra Club John Muir Chapter – The scorecard focuses on bills related to our Chapter’s priority issues of reducing global warming and protecting water resources in Wisconsin.  This scorecard was created by volunteer leaders in our Chapter who track votes throughout the session to inform our approximately 15,000 members statewide and the general public about how their legislators voted on key environmental bills. SCAM ALERTS for SOUTH Central Wisconsin – Federal Trade Commission warns of Voter Registration scam. People are receiving phone calls from phony “election officials” stating that their social security number is needed to verify whether or not they are an eligible voter. If you receive a call like this call the FTC at 1-877-382-4357. Anyone over 18, who is a citizen, and not a felon can vote in Wisconsin without any pre-registration before Election Day.
