Another Smack at Health Care for All by Supporters of the Status Quo
Targeted Radio Ads Full of Half Truths
Madison – The thousands of dollars in special interest money spent lobbying against Healthy Wisconsin apparently wasn’t enough. Senator Jon Erpenbach seeks to set the record straight about the proposal and the money being spent on radio ads to defeat Healthy Wisconsin.
“The number one issue for the people of Wisconsin continues to be reforming health care; I guess you have to spend a lot of money to try to change people’s minds. Yes, keeping the status quo has just gotten more expensive for the special interests opposed to offering health insurance to everyone in Wisconsin,” Senator Jon Erpenbach said.
“These radio ads are full of half truths, but that is not a big surprise. Opponents of Healthy Wisconsin need to resort to this kind of tactic to try to convince people they don’t deserve health care,” Erpenbach continued.
Fact: Health care costs continue to rise with employers and employees paying more every year for less health care coverage. Healthy Wisconsin offers the same coverage to everyone that their elected officials currently enjoy.
Fact: Emergency rooms must by federal law treat anyone who walks in the door, regardless of whom they are or if they should really be at a clinic. Common ailments often become hospital stays without health insurance. Hospital Association inpatient data shows that the cost of treating a child for asthma in a hospital is $5,605.
Fact: The cost of covering the uninsured is shifted onto private insurance and onto the government, due to the cost of uncompensated health care. According to Families USA, private health insurance policies in Wisconsin cost $794 more per year on average because of this cost shifting.
Fact: Under Healthy Wisconsin, everyone pays their fair share. If you are working, you pay for and get health care. There is a 12 month waiting period for anyone moving to the state to get coverage unless they have a job. If someone is gainfully employed, then they are paying their fair share for coverage under this plan, period.
