Department of Natural Resources Issues Environmental Clean-Up Funds1310for Zander’s Creamery Site
Madison – State Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton) today applauded the awarding of a $30,000 grant to the Village of Cross Plains by the state to assist the environmental clean-up of site of the former Zander’s Creamery on Main Street.
“The state has stepped in to offer a hand to Cross Plains and I thank them for that,” said Erpenbach. “By working together we will restore a site that is ready for new opportunities and has nothing but potential.”
This week, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced it would be providing Cross Plains $30,000 for “environmental assessment and building demolition” for the site of the Creamery, which closed in 2004.
The Cross Plains grant is part of $1.7 million being distributed by the DNR under the Brownfields Site Assessment Program. The Cross Plains grant is one of 30 new grants being awarded around the state.
“I am pleased Cross Plains is getting assistance in revitalizing what has been a dormant location for the past few years,” said Erpenbach. “I look forward to seeing the good this clean-up does for the community and the local economy.”
The Brownfields program began in 1999 and was enacted to provide local municipalities assistance with revitalizing areas whose market potential is hindered by environmental clean-up needs. Over 180 local communities have received grants from the DNR since the program first began with more than $11 million allocated in the effort.
