Erpenbach Joins Governor Doyle to Tout $44 Million Financial Aid Boast
Savanna Oaks Middle School Hosts Event Promoting Access to Higher Education
Madison – State Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton) offered strong support for Governor Jim Doyle’s plans to increase financial aid for students and the Wisconsin Covenant, making higher education affordable for Wisconsin students.
“Every student who works hard and plays by the rules should be able to afford college,” said Erpenbach, who joined the Governor at an event at Savanna Oaks Middle School in Fitchburg. “We are taking dramatic steps to ensure college remains affordable for the middle class.”
Under the plan, student financial aid, which has doubled in the last four years would be increased an additional $44 million over the next two years. Governor Doyle has said he will invest $225 million system-wide to increase access for students.
“The dividend on our investment in higher education is returned ten-fold,” said Erpenbach. “Our investment will lead to a skilled workforce, family-supporting jobs, and a higher quality of life in our state.”
Under the proposed Wisconsin Covenant, every eighth grade student in Wisconsin, regardless of income, will be able to sign a pledge promising to be a good citizen and student. In exchange for maintaining a B average with an appropriate course load and staying on the right path in the community a spot will be guaranteed in the UW and Technical College System, or at a number of other private, non-profit and independent colleges.
Wisconsin Covenant scholars will also be eligible for financial aid on a need basis. Others will receive opportunities for work study, as well as loans and grants to assist them in their education.
“Perhaps the most important investment a middle class family makes is higher education,” said Erpenbach. “But in no way should it be the most expensive.”
Erpenbach, who currently serves as Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, also is a member of the Senate Committee on Education.
