Governor, Senate Democrats to Protect Prescription Drug Coverage for Seniors
SeniorCare is one of Wisconsin’s most successful programs—why the Bush Administration refuses to recognize this is startling.
But with the announcement the federal government is insisting Wisconsin end SeniorCare, the Governor has worked closely with Senate Democrats and the rest of the legislature to ensure Wisconsin seniors continue to enjoy prescription drug coverage.
This is critical. We have heard countless stories of the impact of high prescription drug prices on Wisconsin seniors. No senior should have to choose between food and medicine.
Governor Doyle has continued to show real leadership in protecting prescription drug coverage for Wisconsinites. The Governor has announced a WisconsinCare plan to allow both seniors and those with disabilities to receive drug coverage without the problems associated with the federal drug program.
Eligibility for WisconsinCare extends to all Wisconsin seniors who are enrolled in Medicare, have an income not exceeding $24,504 ($32,856 for married couples) and are not receiving Medicaid. Anyone under 65 years-old who is enrolled in Medicare, not receiving Medicaid with an income less than $16,336 ($21,904 for married couples) is also eligible for WisconsinCare.
SeniorCare provided much needed financial assistance for Wisconsin seniors; more than 110,000 seniors used SeniorCare in the last five years. Over $200 million worth of prescription drug relief was provided to our seniors in 2006 alone.
Faced with the numerous shortcomings of the Medicare Part D program the Bush administration was pushing for Wisconsin, I joined fellow legislators on both sides of the aisle in requesting the federal government allow us to continue to help Wisconsin seniors.
Unfortunately, these pleas were denied; although SeniorCare received a brief reprieve, it was clear we needed to act. The Governor led the way in this innovative WisconsinCare program and Senate Democrats will be there to help pass this critical legislation
