Cell Phone Do Not Call
Sign Up Begins Today

Erpenbach Measure Included in Budget Repair Begins

Madison – Wisconsin consumers will be able to sign up their cell phone numbers to be added to the “Do Not Call” list starting today. The new list will be sent to telemarketers on September 1; to make that list consumers must sign up before the end of August.

“The addition of cell phones to the list makes Wisconsin’s “Do Not Call” law even stronger. This highly popular, successful state program does not cost taxpayers and is a great example of where a state program helps people. I continue to be proud to have been a part of this programs creation and improvement,” said Erpenbach.

Erpenbach’s 2007 Senate Bill 99 adding cell phones to the list passed the bi-partisan Joint Committee on Finance on a vote of 16-0 and the Senate unanimously. The bill died in the Assembly without action at the end of session. Wisconsin’s “Do Not Call” law went into effect January 1, 2003 and has been steadily popular with consumers. Consumers must renew their registration every two years.

“More and more people are moving to one phone, their cell phone for all telecommunications services. Telemarketers followed that move and it is more than time to add cell numbers to the “Do Not Call” law. I will continue to pursue adding additional fines to give the law stronger enforcement,” Erpenbach said.

Consumers can register between now and the end of August to be included in the first “no call” database that includes cell phones. Register online at https://nocall.wisconsin.gov/web/home.asp or by calling 1-866-9NO-CALL (1-866-966-2255) toll-free in Wisconsin.
