Schultz rejects tax hikes to fix budget shortfall
Madison ... How to plug a massive hole in the state budget was the subject of debate in the state senate today. Senator Dale Schultz called on his colleagues to stop playing games and act on a bipartisan compromise without increasing taxes by half-a-billion dollars.
Schultz could not support the Democrat majority proposal that plugs the state’s 650 million dollar budget shortfall with higher taxes. Schultz said families cut spending when incomes drop and the state can do the same. He called for responsible action before the state’s fiscal problems worsen.
An example of why Schultz rejected the bill to fix the budget was a provision he said would add $416 million in taxes on sick and injured people when they pay their hospital bill. Schultz said the idea simply makes health care even more expensive.
