Senate Scholar Program

Each year one high school junior or senior from each of Wisconsin's 33 Senate Districts is selected to particpate in the Senate Scholar Program at the State Capitol in Madison.

The program provides student participants an up close view of all aspects of the legislative process.  Students meet and work with legislators, legislative support agencies, legislative aides, the Governor’s staff, a Supreme Court Justice, the media, lobbyists and faculty from the UW LaFollette School of Public Affairs.

Then students put their knowledge into action by staffing a floor session of the full Senate, under the direction of the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms’ office.

The highlight of the experience is when student scholars draft legislation, hold a mock committee hearing on their bill, and debate all sides of the issue between themselves, lobbyists and citizens that testify before their committee.

This year, Tim Emerson of the River Valley School District was selected for the 2008 Senate Scholar Program.  The program takes place every February, but it is never too early to consider applying. If you, or someone you know would make a good candidate, please have them view the video below and review the application materials.  Getting an early start can only improve a prospective candidates chances of acceptance to the program.
