Dear Friend,

It is my pleasure to invite you to tour the State Capitol and other exciting educational sites around the Capitol Square! I am excited about the opportunities that our state holds for teaching its citizens about Wisconsin history – from our native people to Wisconsinites who fought in Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. I urge you to take full advantage of these opportunities by visiting the capital city of Madison. I am sometimes able to arrange a room in the Capitol for school groups to have lunch, and if I am in town I will be more than honored to take a picture with your group and join your tour! Please feel free to contact my office to set-up a tour or to let me know when you are coming to Madison! I hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Visit the State Capitol

The Wisconsin State Capitol offers tours daily on the hour from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with the exception of the noon hour. The tour includes all four floors of the capitol with inside looks at the Senate and Assembly Chambers, the Governor’s Conference Room and the Supreme Court. The tour covers interesting facts about the construction of the Capitol, the décor, fun facts about Wisconsin, and an explanation of how our government works. The tour lasts about one hour and is guided by a trained Capitol tour guide. To schedule a tour contact (608) 266-0382 for a reservation

The State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is located on the Capitol Square at the top of State Street. The museum hosts three floors dedicated to Wisconsin including the history of archaeology and the first settlers, trade and treaties, and lifeways of the Woodland Indians. The museum also hosts a demonstration of Native American games and one on canoe building, as well as hands-on experiments with tools used in the fur industry and by Indians. Reservations for a guided tour must be made one month in advance by calling (608) 264-6557.

Wisconsin Children’s Museum

The Wisconsin Children’s Museum is situated across from the State Historical Museum at the top of State Street. This hands-on museum is the first of it’s kind in Wisconsin. The exhibits featured include a room where you can freeze your shadow onto a phosphorescent wall, plant a vegetable in a garden and visit a schoolhouse from 1898. The museum is designed for ages 10 & under. Reservations can be made by calling (608) 256-6445.

Wisconsin Veterans Museum

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum is also located on the Capitol Square across the street from the Historical Museum. This museum houses exhibits and displays that tell the story of the men and women from Wisconsin who served in America’s conflicts from the Civil War to the Persian Gulf War. The displays depict important historical events by lifelike figures dressed in genuine military attire, with genuine military equipment. The two main galleries in the museum are dedicated to the 19th century and the 20th century, respectively. The 20th century gallery houses three aircraft including a helicopter from the Vietnam War! The museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Guided tours are available with advance reservations which can be made by calling (608) 267-1799
